Meet Our People: Audrey Morlan
Audrey Morlan is KSMC’s Operations Coordinator supporting our organization’s financial operations. She brings a unique skillset to KSMC after pairing her finance degree from Indiana University with the Informatics minor she chose to pursue following her experience as an intern with KSMC during the first BraveCamp in 2018.

What led you to do the work you are doing now?
When I started at KSMC as an intern, I really wasn’t into technology. I was studying finance, but I didn’t really have a clear path and kind of fell in love the company and with the way people continue to learn and grow here [at KSMC]… It is fascinating to me to see the backend of the business, the parts that people don’t always see, and to be a part of making those things happen. Plus, I like the idea of taking huge pieces of dataorganizing it, and putting it together in a way that means something. (Yes, this is also why I am in accounting!)

Tell us about your initial experience with BraveCamp (when you were still an intern). What impact did it have on you?
Initially, I was overwhelmed as all of the others in my intern group were familiar with coding, but I was not. This piqued my curiosity, and so I took it upon myself to study coding via YouTube videos. I learned how to do HTML and CSS. It was a bit rough at first, but eventually, I felt very accomplished. As BraveCamp went on, I was able to witness all of these young girls come in and learn much of what I just learned. They took their knowledge and developed a website centered around something they are passionate about within their communities. This spurred me to change my minor at the last minute. I was a senior at Indiana University and only had 12 credits left to complete. Instead of taking the “fun” classes, such as pottery or rock climbing, I was taking Database Management and Informatics. This was so cool to me, as I found something that I loved to do that I never thought I’d be able to do!

What are you most excited about this year?
I am most excited about learning more accounting skills as they relate to the real world. When it’s a homework assignment for a fake company, it just doesn’t mean as much. Learning how things work in real life and having some high stakes behind them will be good for me.

What has been your most rewarding day at KSMC?
The most rewarding day at KSMC so far was the exciting day that, after being an intern, I received a full-time offer!

What do you want to learn more about?
I would like to learn more about data science and what that KSMC team does, and maybe even go into a masters program somewhere down the road. I was really into that element as I finished my degree. I wanted to take more data-related classes, but I ran out of time at IU.

What’s the most impressive thing you know how to do?
The most impressive thing that I know how to do is to play the viola, classically. A viola is similar to a violin but larger.

Do you have any songs completely memorized?
I have completely memorized Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s a karaoke go-to. Everybody loves it. The thing is, I’m a terrible singer.
