2018 Summer Internship Recap

Learn from our Summer 2018 Interns what they took away from their KSMC experience.

An intern’s biggest fear: that they’ll spend their days filing paper, restocking the supply cabinet, or making coffee runs.

That was far from reality for our summer interns. Instead, they were kept busy gaining hard skills related to data and analytics, coding, videography, financial analysis, and operations, as well as soft skills that encompassed how to interact with clients, present in front of an audience, and brainstorm effectively with Design Thinking.

At KSM Consulting, we live and breathe our values, so it seemed fitting that the interns prepared a summary of what they learned about our values to conclude their time with us this summer.

From our 2018 Summer Interns:
During our internship this summer, we had weekly sessions with different KSMC employees focusing on their specific practice areas. During their presentations, they discussed one of our seven values – Thought Leadership, Collaboration and Teamwork, Fearless Problem Solving, Empathy, Perseverance, Technical Excellence, and Client Focused. In each meeting, we became more familiar with what it means to be a part of the KSMC community, and what differentiates us from other companies. Though our time as KSMC interns was short, we could all see that the daily implementation of these values is what makes KSMC who we are.

First and foremost, we are thought leaders, continuously growing and developing our knowledge. Whether through design thinking, TED Talks, Toastmasters, or blogging, we’re always pushing our company and our industry into the future. Just as these things help create an innovative culture, our love of collaboration and teamwork ensures we’re constantly learning. At KSMC, we each recognize we aren’t the smartest person in the room, and we use that to fuel our collaborative efforts. We use our diverse skill sets and approaches to our advantage, and the result is always stronger and more powerful solutions. But teamwork doesn’t just happen inside the office; KSMC employees strive to work WITH their clients – not just FOR them. Our employees dive deep so they can truly understand the problem, and they tell clients what they need to hear, rather than what they want to.

Furthermore, we use fearless problem solving to do what is right for the client, recognizing that the first solution we think of isn’t always the best one. We won’t stop until we find that best solution. And in a company where excellence is the goal for everything we do, it only follows that technical excellence is so deeply ingrained in who we are. We foster a constant drive for personal development. Our employees are always prepared with the skills and technology to handle the biggest, most complex solutions.

Arguably at the core of KSMC’s values is our client focus. At every stage in the process, our clients and their needs come first. Along the way, our employees use empathy to understand and feel with our clients. We put ourselves in their shoes to understand where they are coming from, and to find the root of the problem. We become advocates for our clients and persevere, pushing ourselves and them to dig deeper and find the best solution. Good solutions aren’t enough at KSMC – we’re only satisfied with great ones.

Our passionate staff members exhibit these values in everything they do, which brings the community together to achieve our goals. And throughout our summer as interns, we’ve taken on many of the same beliefs. Over the past few months, we have worked to create a plan for KSMC’s fall community day – an annual event that brings together our rapidly growing organization to generate a positive impact.

Our search led us to The Villages, an Indianapolis organization that supports children through high-quality care, in the hopes that all children will have the opportunity to truly flourish. The Villages of Indiana expresses empathy by providing quality care and education for anyone, regardless of their economic standings. Moreover, they persevere to ensure that every child will flourish in a healthy, nurturing, self-sufficient family. The Villages empathizes with Indianapolis families and works tirelessly to ease their burden. In everything they do, children are the focus, and the result is excellent childcare. We are proud to partner with an organization whose own values align so strongly with ours.

Overall, this summer has taught us the importance of company values. At KSM Consulting, values are more than just a motto. They are part of every employee, every project, and every solution. They are the cause of the innovative atmosphere you feel as soon as you walk in the door. We believe in our values, and carry them with us every time we approach a new problem. As the summer comes to a close for our time at KSMC, the Summer 2018 intern team is sure that we will carry these values with us into our next chapter.
